Viral is effective because it's considered a word to mouth form a friend or acquaintance reliable recommendation and not seams to be a sale made by the product/service owner.

I have been a longtime fan of Wordpress. It seems that bloggers are jumping to Wordpress more and more - some that have been blogging for upwards of 4+ years. I think that is saying something about the wordpress platform and userability. Have fun!

David,

I read your entry and I agree with you 100%. Top grading your staff should be a must, (they're there for a reason) if companies are laying off workers left and right it would make sense they would keep the best of the best. Circuit City was a retail giant, hence the word "was"; however I can understand why they're now out of business; they simply lacked quality in customer service, product knowledge, and most importantly...management.

While we can sit here and complain all we want about retailers, we have to look at this picture from a distance a bit, and at how fast our technology is progressing. Can we actually blame salesman for not knowing their products? Is it possible that the progression of our technology is too fast for us to keep up? Anybody can sell a cd or dvd player, but how many people can sell a top of the line digital SLR camera especially trying to understand the different technologies of each manufacturer. While some of us are technologically savvy, most of the world is not.

I leave my shopping strictly online, the prices are better, there are no pushy salesman, and reading the specification of the product I want is a lot more calming than salesman throwing me a sales pitch speaking at a mile a minute. Online retailers have it easy, they obtain the necessary information they want to sell, and slap it in between table tags in an html page, no communication required, no product knowledge required, if it's what i want, all i have to do is click "buy". I'm my own salesman.

-Good post.

Thanks for the quick response. I didn't read your message prior to making my last one.
I don't think that many companies would be capable of deliberating their brand message to the public and have the control that is needed to respond to the wealth of correspondence that would surface, pretty or ugly! Perhaps, business could get on the super highway of communication through these social networks by merely displaying their messages ... Read Moreand moving on. No one wants to be innodated with brand information to frequently as they will become negative to the product.

I'll be waiting for your Weblog Part II. I also want to thank you for spurring up some good conversation here on Facebook! I was impressed and liked your choice of words. ;)

Good points. And I think you iterate one of the issues I will continue to debate and that is the fact that most companies aren't structurally prepared to deal with the possible wild west outcome from placing themselves in the social media space. They usually pull the campaign or modify it to avoid negative outcomes vs embracing what in many cases is truthful feedback about how they are managing their brand. If you are going to say you are "social" then you have to be ready to actually interact with the community. Thanks for the comments, keep them coming.

In my personal opinion and past experience, networking is a healthy way to do business. It allows you to strengthen business relationships. Using facebook, twitter, and myspace can open the doors to allowing people to see a more softer, personal side to you. It can also allow you to network in a nonconforming way. I believe that it is up to each individual who works at a business to decide if that is the direction they prefer to go, while still maintaining a level of professionalism when business is at hand. It is also my position that each person take responsibility for their own correspondence, so if it becomes inappropriate or unprofessional at some point than they need to prepare themselves for the outcome.
